John Strand underscored the escalating security concerns associated with global telecommunications infrastructure, particularly the escalating dependence on Chinese equipment. Utilizing decades of expertise in the telecommunications industry, he emphasized that as societies undergo a profound digitization and interconnectedness, telecommunications networks have emerged as critical infrastructure potentially even more vital than traditional military assets. Strand cautioned that companies such as Huawei and ZTE have amassed substantial market share in global 5G networks, particularly in European regions, thereby creating potential national security vulnerabilities.

He observed that despite cognizance of these risks, numerous European countries particularly Germany remain heavily reliant on Chinese telecom infrastructure. Strand contended that sanctions have had a limited impact on Chinese telecom equipment deployment and cautioned that if such infrastructure were disrupted, it could severely impact financial systems and communication networks. He concluded by urging governments to enhance transparency, diminish reliance on high-risk vendors, and consider telecommunications infrastructure as a fundamental component of national security, freedom, and democratic resilience.
