Prof. Jamil Jaffer discussed about the advent of generative AI, and the opportunities andchallenges it presents for countries worldwide. He believes in the advantages of AI’s increased pace and scale of adaption and novel ways of problem solving that can take off the table the mundane and routine works. However, there are also huge issues that come along with AI: job displacement, disinformation, misinformation, deep fakes, and privacy and security issues, among others. He also mentioned the lack of transparency and explainability in AI systems, and the huge ethical issues that come with decision making by AI or AI-assisted systems including in the space of weapon deployment used in the context of defense.

In response to the challenges posed by AI, Prof. Jaffer acknowledged the need for effective regulation and governance. He pointed out the swift actions taken by European lawmakers, who passed a 114-page bill regulating AI, while in the U.S., an executive order under President Biden began a review of AI regulations. He stressed the importance of finding a balance between regulation and innovation, advocating for policies that allow AI to be used responsibly while ensuring safety, security, and transparency. Ultimately, he emphasized the need for education and legislative efforts that equip nations to harness AI’s benefits, protect privacy, and safeguard against potential abuses, while making informed decisions about data usage and AI’s societal impact.
