Mr. Boggs convened a distinguished panel of experts on cryptocurrency, comprising Jessica, Eric Bthell, and Combis Ramidi Rahimi. These experts, with extensive experience in government, finance, and technology, provided valuable insights into the evolution of money from traditional currencies to credit cards and the emergence of cryptocurrencies.
The panel delved into the various types of cryptocurrencies, including purely digital currencies, stablecoins, and central bank-backed digital currencies. They underscored the rapid growth of cryptocurrency transactions, surpassing $1 trillion in 2021, while simultaneously acknowledging the dual challenge posed by its adoption. While adoption is increasing, illicit use presents risks such as criminal abuse, sanctions evasion, and victimization of innocent individuals.
The panel emphasized the traceability of cryptocurrencies, which presents opportunities for law enforcement. However, it noted that not all countries possess the necessary tools to enforce this traceability effectively. The discussion also highlighted the use of cryptocurrencies in conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Russia, Iran, and Syria, underscoring the complexities of governance, security, and oversight.
