Victor Gonzalez emphasized that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has proven far more severe than many anticipated. However, he commended the unexpectedly strong and unified response from NATO, Europe, and allied nations, a characteristic absent in previous crises. Nevertheless, he cautioned that sustaining this unity will become increasingly challenging as Europe grapples with record inflation, energy shortages, and economic strain. Gonzalez highlighted past energy policy errors that left countries vulnerable and criticized nations that continue to benefit economically from trade with Russia. He also pointed to Russian interference through disinformation campaigns and support for separatist movements, citing examples such as Scotland and Catalonia, and warned of growing divisions within Europe itself. Furthermore, he expressed concern over China’s expanding global influence since joining the World Trade Organization in 2001. He argued that expectations of political liberalization were misguided and that authoritarian influence is spreading across parts of Africa and Latin America. He concluded by urging Western nations to remain united, strengthen energy and economic independence, and be prepared to bear higher costs to defend freedom, democratic values, and the rules-based international order.
