Honorable Cristian Bacanu delivered a compelling statement of solidarity with Ukraine, expressing profound gratitude to Ukrainian servicemen, diplomats, and leaders who are defending freedom in Europe. He characterized Russia as an enduring imperial power, drawing upon Ronald Reagan’s description of the Soviet Union as an “evil empire.” Bacanu argued that President Putin perceives himself as a successor to historical Russian rulers such as Peter the Great and Alexander III of Russia. He asserted that Russia’s aggression reflects a persistent imperial mindset and cautioned that its ambitions extend beyond Ukraine. He emphasized the significance of sustained unity and vigilance even after the war concludes, citing hybrid threats, intelligence operations, and efforts to destabilize Europe. Drawing upon Romania’s historical experience, he highlighted his country’s humanitarian and logistical support to Ukraine, including providing refuge for refugees and facilitating grain exports. He concluded that comprehending Russia’s historical patterns and ideological motivations is crucial to safeguarding European security and ensuring continued support for Ukraine.
