  • U.S. Dependence on Imports: The United States is entirely reliant on imported titanium sponge, and 92% of rare earths originate from China, creating strategic vulnerabilities for military and industrial applications.
  • Thorium as a Strategic Mineral: Thorium is abundant, three times more prevalent than uranium, and predominantly co-located with rare earth deposits. Its regulatory classification in the United States complicates mining operations.
  • Molten Salt Reactors: Developed by Alvin Weinberg in the 1960s, thorium-fueled molten salt reactors offer:
    • Passive safety systems that prevent meltdowns.
    • The ability to burn spent nuclear fuel, thereby mitigating waste concerns.
    • Shorter-lived radioactive waste (~300 years compared to ~100,000 years for uranium).
    • Lower construction costs compared to pressurized light-water reactors.
  • Missed Opportunity and Global Implications: The United States shelved thorium research in the 1970s in favor of uranium. In 2012, U.S. thorium technology was transferred to China, which has subsequently launched its inaugural thorium test reactor.
  • Energy Potential: One ton of thorium can generate as much energy as 3.5 million tons of coal; a small quantity could theoretically power a household for an entire lifetime.
